Wet artists' adhesive tape, also known as gummed tape, is used to stretch watercolor paper. This prevents the paper from buckling or warping when you apply a lot of water while painting. The tape's adhesive is activated with water.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Prepare the Paper and Board: Cut your watercolor paper to size. Lightly mark the paper about 1 inch from the edges to guide tape placement. Ensure your board is clean and dry.

Cut the Tape: Cut four strips of tape, each a few inches longer than the sides of your paper. Keep the roll of tape away from water.

Soak the Paper: Submerge the watercolor paper in water for a few minutes until it is fully saturated. Let the excess water drip off.

Attach the Paper to the Board: Place the wet paper on the board and smooth out any wrinkles or air bubbles, working from the center outward.

Activate and Apply the Tape: Use a damp sponge to quickly and evenly moisten the gummed side of one tape strip. Align the tape so it overlaps the paper and the board by about half its width. Press down firmly to create a strong bond.

Repeat for All Sides: Repeat this process for the remaining three sides, ensuring the tape is applied smoothly.

Let It Dry: Lay the board flat and allow the paper and tape to dry completely. This can take several hours. As the paper dries, it will contract and become taut. Do not use a hairdryer to speed up the process, as this can cause uneven drying and may cause the tape to fail.

Important Tips

Do not get the roll wet. The adhesive on the tape is water-activated, so keep the roll away from any moisture.

Wet the tape quickly. Too much water can dissolve the glue.

Removing the tape: Gummed tape forms a very strong bond. After you finish your painting, you will need to cut the paper off the board by carefully slicing along the inner edge of the tape.
